(from page 291 of DEVIL MAKE A THIRD) "Listen, he [Jake] said, flatly, "if you want to go to Kilkare with me an' the Ziglar girls, come on, but don't keep arguin' at me all the time." There was a swimming pool from about 1915 to the 1920s in Newton named JONE'S POOL or KIL-KARE SPRINGS. It was near the ACL station so you could jump on most northbound Dothan trains to get there. Any information concerning this resort will be appreciated.

"Here is a picture of my granddad and grandmother on left with her sister Mattie. The photo says 'Jones Pool in Ozark 1929'. I guess they got the town wrong?" Joe Hardy

"They will make the trip through the country in Mrs. Baker's car."

page 239 of DEVIL MAKE A THIRD:

Jeff stayed bent over the oranges, watching until the small knot of people standing on the bank corner began to nudge each other and crane their heads around the side of the building, then he straightened up and turned around. The quick frightened yelp of a dog cut through the jumble of little-town noises and up on the corner a small boy put two fingers in his mouth and whistled loudly. Buck raised his head as if he were looking over the shoulder of someone in front of him and watched the corner.

The hood of the huge black automobile nosed carefully around the corner, and turned down Basin Street, avoiding a deep pit where the brick paving had sunk, then straddling a patch of broken glass, until it came straight out of the turn.

Buck saw it all, then, all of it, for the first time- a long square high-built Wescott with the top down, shiny with brass over the radiator, a solid glisten from front to sweating colored boy whose right hand held the wheel and whose left hand caressed the red rubber bulb of a Klaxon horn. Buck saw the boy turn his head to speak over his shoulder, then he saw Lota.

Lota in the back seat alone- Lota lolling against the stiff black-leather cushions- Lota in a dark-green hat with a lime-colored willow plume stiffened to curl over the top of her head and on around back of her right ear to sweep over the dark-brown velvet collar of a lighter brown suit- Lota with her right arm trailing along the edge of the back door and Lota with the long strong fingers of her right hand tapping studiedly against the metal- Lota, facing three-quarters away from his side of the street, smiling slightly and nodding to an open-mouthed woman on the street- Lota!

Buck's eyes blinked, then opened wide as the car snorted and rumbled nearer. He said just one word.

"Goddamn!"

Here's the entire ALL-AMERICAN story of DEVIL MAKE A THIRD in two paragraphs (from the June 25, 1909 MONTGOMERY ADVERTISER):

After years spent playing around with the characters, incidents, place names and colloquialisms of the novel DEVIL MAKE A THIRD, the process of footnoting the entire novel began with 52 footnotes containing both text and images for Chapter 1. All of this work has been preserved on the blog The DEVIL MAKE A THIRD Commentary. The footnoting will continue but a new endeavor has begun which will be a study guide which will closely follow the story.

"Chapter 1: Buck left the farm when he was eighteen."

The novel DEVIL MAKE A THIRD opens with young Buck Bannon behind the plow "blinded by the sun", with sweat stinging his eyes and burning as it soaked  into the raw places on his neck chafed by the mule's reins but none of that mattered because "he was eighteen  and he was following a mule for the last time." The reader has no idea whether Buck had spontaneously made this momentous decision or whether it was made after careful planning. One thing is for certain, the main thing on Buck's mind is how he's going to tell his Mama he's leaving the old home place forever and moving to the nearby town of Aven.
